The Harris Family Celebration

2nd Annual Family Celebration

Our summers are typically packed with family reunions, but there is one gathering with my husband’s family that I look forward to every year. It’s not as big as the other reunions we are invited to and it is not as fancy, but it is loads of fun. Every year, on the first weekend in June, my husband’s family plans a celebration involving food and games. This celebration is dedicated to his grandmother who passed away in 1990 due to an illness. She is loved and will always be remembered for her kind heart, warm smile, and ability to make you feel super special. Every year, a new theme is introduced and this year we had the ultimate family luau.

Don’t Drop the Egg…or Hula Hoop!

We arrived with the cake, designed by Thistle and Bake Bakery and was in awe of the decor and goodies that were already there. Once settled, we headed outside to play games and participate in the competitions. They said my little cousin was the winner of the hula hoop contest, but I am very convinced that it was me. We divided into teams and played “Don’t Drop the Egg.” This game produces lots of laughs and cheaters. No one won and everyone cheated so…it was a good game.

While the adults played their games, the smaller kids played in the pool even though the water was freezing. They seemed to have a blast. It was not long before the older kids decided to have a water balloon fight. Everything seemed peachy until my husband decided that he wanted to throw a water balloon at me. I recruited the older kids to help me soak him. Even if I had to throw every remaining water balloon at him, he was going to learn that he made a big mistake starting a water balloon fight with me. It cooled down a bit so, we took the younger kids inside to get them dried and dressed.

Remembering Momma

In the garage, there was a set up for a memorial to take place. Children and grandchildren shared their memories about their mom while a slideshow played in the background displaying the mom’s pictures on the screen. It was beautiful! There were circumstances that prevented us from being able to honor Mother’s Day as a family so, the men acknowledged and gave shout outs to all the moms in the room. Afterwards, we said grace and had dinner. It was a nice way to enter into our next event of fellowship.

2nd Annual Harris Family Celebration

We all worked together to pull off an amazing event. The food was amazing and everyone raved about the desserts. I wouldn’t trade the bonding I experienced during the games for anything. There’s nothing like family coming together.  We had a plan, created a budget, and everything ran accordingly.  Boy am I looking forward to next year’s event!
